genmaicha

type: green

ingredients: green tea popped rice

caffeine: no-caffeine

price level: $$$$

Watch out, it's addictive Some people call Genmaicha popcorn tea because it contains whole roasted grains of brown rice, some of which have popped. Others call it the Rice Krispie of green teas. Either way, genmaicha was originally drunk by poor Japanese who used the rice as a filler because they couldn't afford enough tea leaves. It soon became all the rage. Today, everyone is addicted to its sweet, toasted rice flavour. (MK Kosher)

I have tried other Genmai Cha blends, and frankly they are all a bit strange. There is a vague cereal taste to it, which is not bad - just a bit odd. This blend brewed up a bit bitter, but that may have been my mistake as I let it steep a bit too long.

This is my first genmaicha, and I love the toasted rice flavor. I can get three quality brews with the same tea, with the later steeps brewed at 3 to 4 minutes to get the strength up. This makes me want to try other vendor's versions as well.

Pretty good. I have had genmaichas that have been tastier and less expensive, however, and I think this company's blend is a little too bitter overall.

Initially, I was not sold. But I came back for a second cup, because I had bought a 2oz bag to try on a friend's recommendation and love for genmaicha. Well, darn it, now I need like 10 more bags of this. It grew on me, I guess I just really wasn't in the mood for it when I tried it or perhaps I steeped it too long. But now? I cannot get enough.
