The Machiko cultivar is prized by Japanese tea lovers for its distinctive cherry blossom aroma. Developed in Shizuoka in the late 60's and early 70's, Machiko has a high amount of the naturally occuring antioxidant coumarin, which is associated with the unique aromatics. Our Machiko selection was cultivated by Mr. Sugiyama, who is the only farmer in Shizuoka that grows Machiko according to certified organic practices. Rishi founder and tea buyer Joshua traveled to Shimizu area in May 2019 to visit Mr. Sugiyama during the harvest of Machiko and select a micro-lot with intense notes of sakura mochi, cherry blossoms, fresh almonds and anisette cookies with a striking balance of bittersweet and umami. It is very lively and stimulating with refreshingly low tannin and smooth aftertaste.
